Homemade flour tortillas just like my mom used to make.

My mom learned this recipe many years ago when she was a missionary in Mexico. As she was working to improve her tortilla making skills, she would offer samples to my dad. When she would ask him how they tasted, he was so delighted to try the samples that he simply replied with “keep trying.”
My mom kept trying for the rest of her life. She would often make these tortillas to share with family and friends whenever possible. She then began sharing the recipe with anyone who wanted to learn. Now, it is my turn to pass the recipe on to you.
Flour Tortillas
Ingredients
4 cups flour
½ tsp baking powder
2 tsp salt
½ cup lard
1½ cups warm water
Directions
In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt until well mixed.
Using your hands, mix in the lard until it all has a uniform course texture.
Stir in the warm water until it forms a shaggy dough. Using your hands, mix/knead the dough until it is smooth appropriately stretchy (the more you do this, the better you will get at knowing when it is ready).
Form into 2 Tbs sized patties, and set evenly on a plate, placing plastic wrap between layers and over the top layer.
Allow the patties to set for at least 30 minutes.
Preheat a skillet on about medium heat. You will probably need to adjust the heat as you go.
Dip one patty into a small bowl of flour on both sides.
Using a rolling pin, roll the patty out into a circular shape (perfection doesn't matter. It will still taste yummy and probably hold a taco). Depending on preferences, roll the tortilla to about 6-8 inches in diameter and/or about ⅛ inch thick. You may need to flip the tortilla a couple times and add flour
Place the tortilla on the skillet.
When it starts to bubble, flip the tortilla.
When it bubbles and you see some brown spots forming, your tortilla is done.
Remove from heat and repeat steps 7-11 with the remaining patties.
Please remember that you will get better at this each time you try. We'd love to hear about your experience. Leave a comment and let us know how it went for you.
