What is a CSA?

We're excited to announce that our CSA is now open for the 2025 season!

We are hoping that you are excited and ready to join us too, but we’re guessing that many of you don’t even know what that means. We thought we’d take some time now to share with you what a CSA is and how you can get involved.  We would love to share some wonderful produce with you!

Community supported agriculture (CSA) is a way to partner with farmers.  It is a unique partnership that supports both the farmers (us) and the members (you). CSA members pay into a farm up front ($225 for our membership in 2025) in exchange for regular produce packages throughout the harvest season. In this way our members share both in the risk and the reward that comes along with farming. There is no guarantee of specific products, as some things do better than others each year depending on temperature, rainfall, and pests.

We are able to use funds at the start of the growing season to purchase the necessary seeds and supplies to get us started, while you wait to start receiving your produce. The harvest starts small in May, but increases as the season goes. When we harvest, we set aside the best produce for our members, taking into consideration what is a reasonable portion for a family to use within that week (or before the produce would go bad). We sell our remaining produce at various markets throughout the summer.  Early in the season, you will receive produce every other week.  Later in the season, you will receive produce weekly.  At the end of the season, you may receive produce biweekly again.

We are planning to have a pick-up location in Shenandoah each time your produce is ready.  We will work to have it available at a consistent and predictable time for you.  If you prefer to have your produce delivered to your door, we will do that all season long for an additional one time $20 fee.  We work to be flexible with your schedule as we know everyone has many responsibilities.

Last year our farm provided each CSA member with $249 worth of produce.  While we can’t guarantee the value of this year’s produce, we do promise to work diligently to ensure that you get your value back and then some.  If you have questions as you consider joining us, please reach out! You can email thefreedfamilyfarm@gmail.com or call/text Tim at 712-215-5214.

If you have heard enough and are ready to jump in, you can make the commitment on this page of our website.

Thank you,

Tim, Kathryn, and family
